O’Diary 23 June / Pasta, baby boogie + lambchop sideburns

Happy weekend, all. Last weekend the family O’D enjoyed a lovely Father’s Day trip to one of my favourite Hull spots, Uno’s on Princes Ave, where the fabulous staff showered Junior with attention and free pasta.  Not literally, of course, although you wouldn’t have thought it to look at him. He was so delighted with life, his little face covered in Napoli sauce, that we just about forgave him for ripping up his grandma’s copy of last Saturday’s Weekend supplement. Any guesses for which page he tore in half and tried to eat? Thanks Junior. I’ll take it as a compliment.

The brilliant Big Malarkey Festival returns to East Park today and tomorrow, with a jampacked family programme on both days. The Baby Boogie session this afternoon sounds like lots of fun.  Although when I mentioned it to Junior I could have sworn he rolled his eyes. I expect his first words will be “step away from the dancefloor, mother.” Unluckily for him he cannot talk yet, so Baby Boogie it is.

Speaking of boogying,

The Adelphi’s got a belter of a Saturday night gig in the form of Smoove and Turrell tonight. If funk and soul is your thing then you could definitely do worse than scooting down to De Grey Street this evening.

From the ultra-cool

to the ridiculous,

at New Theatre

from Tuesday. Mr O’Diary finds the majority of old telly sitcoms hilarious – yes, even You Rang M’Lord? – and so this theatre show with Joe Pasquale looks like it will be right up his street. Even if he would never admit it.

As much as I want the summer to go on forever, there’s another autumn gig on my radar that I’m already looking forward to. Gaz Coombes of Supergrass fame

has just

he’s playing The Welly
in October;

I’d hurry to get tickets for this as it’s bound to be a popular one. I’m still gutted that I missed seeing Supergrass play at The Adelphi at the height of their Britpop success in the 1990s. I wasn’t born at the time, obviously. Ahem. Anyway, I don’t think Mr Coombes’ lambchop sideburns are quite as impressive these days but he’s still pretty darned cool. Have a wonderful week.
